Dating An Alien Popstar by Kendra L Saunders Guest Post +Giveaway

Crimson Tree Publishing is proud to present a new release, Dating An Alien Popstar by Kendra L. Saunders.

Daisy Kirkwood has only just escaped her small-town life and run away to New York City, the land of last-minute secret gigs at famous musical venues, when she's kidnapped by aliens. Unfortunately, no one ever writes about how to handle alien abduction in those fancy NYC guidebooks.

Griffin and Dev are supermassively sexy aliens from a politically and environmentally troubled planet who arrive on Earth with very little knowledge about human ways other than what they learned from a wayward E! News signal. Their mission is to pretend to be the most influential people on the planet—English pop stars, of course!—and gain the help of a powerful secret society. Upon arriving, they abduct Daisy Kirkwood, a nerdy young woman who loves music but could seriously use a bit of help in the love-life department. Though Griffin and Daisy initially squabble, neither can deny the intergalactic sparks whenever they're too close to each other. Together, they must face murderous aliens, cultural misunderstandings, bad backup musicians, and the dark side of fame and the media, all set against a tight deadline…

Part High Fidelity, part Bridget Jones' Diary, part Doctor Who, Dating an Alien Pop Star is a sexy romantic comedy.

Music To Watch (Read) Aliens by Kendra L Saunders

Dating an Alien Pop Star is the story of Daisy, a music nerd who is abducted by two aliens, Griffin and Dev. The aliens ask her to help them pretend to be the most powerful people on Earth... British pop stars, of course!

Following the book's music theme, I asked my best friend Dusty Alexander if she could create some music inspired by the universe of Dating an Alien Pop Star. She made the Kalesstria EP, a three song ambient soundtrack. I asked her a few questions about the EP... and, of course, about aliens!

Q: Of course I know a lot of your musical influence (best friend privilege!) but for people new to your music, who are some of your biggest musical influences?
A: I've been a long time music appreciator but I think the first band that really made me want to be INVOLVED was Sonic Youth. I had a lot of misconceptions in terms of the "rules" - you have to learn x first, you can only write this way, etc. They helped erode that!
I really love music with a lot of texture and abstraction in general, both dark (Rowland S. Howard!) and celestial (the bulk of the original shoegaze movement)

Q: What was the process like, recording these songs?
A: It's quite interesting not having a designated space, everything is literally sprawled out on my living room floor. It's probably not healthy to sit and record tracks in the middle of a sea of tangled cables but it works somehow. I also grew to embrace my technical and equipment limitations and am even growing quite fond of the "AM Radio" lo fi aesthetic. If not out of necessity!

Q: Do you have a favorite song on this EP?
A: I have to say "Travel", it was the only one that was born out of a previous improvisation I had recorded. It feels a little darker than the other two and I kind of like how the piano almost sounds like it's in another room.

Q: In the spirit of Dating an Alien Pop Star (which is about a music nerd named Daisy who is "abducted" by aliens and has to help them pretend to be famous British pop stars), what is your favorite sci-fi movie, book, or TV show?
A: I'm such a sci-fi noob! But Outer Limits is aesthetically perfect. Soundtrack goals for sure.

Q: If you could help teach Griffin to play one instrument, which would you want to teach him?
A: He does not own a keytar yet? That's very Griffin aesthetic, but I would love to see him on grand piano. Or Sax! But I don't remember how to play that so I wouldn't be able to teach him, sadly.

Q: Are you a Griffin or a Dev girl?
A: I skew slightly towards Dev. Griffin might be a full-time job.

Q: You're also a freakin' amazing painter and artist. Where can people see more of your work (besides on the cover of my poetry collection "Geminis and Past Lives")?
A: STOP I'M BLUSHING ...I'm in a very slow process of getting my artwork "blog" going again:dustyalexander.tumblr.com
